Be Inspired My Friend! Bruce Lee Remix

I’ve been in a lot of fights.  I’m not talking professional career here.  I’m talking elementary school.

There were multiple reasons but mainly it was because I really stood out.  I was a white kid living in black neighborhoods.  I changed schools quite a bit too so I was constantly the “new kid”.  Not to mention I was a skinny, geeky looking dude who was a physical threat to no one.  That might not seem like a bad thing but the places where I spent my early childhood were…

Fighting the Pain

As an old lady in a young person’s sport, my body is beginning to feel the pain:  shoulder, wrist, knee, toe.  I limp around the warm-up circle, wear a wrist support under my boxing glove, and do a lot more whimpering and cringing than I did six months ago.  But I am still out there.

I always wondered why people continued to do things that hurt them.  Why athletes would return to their sport after multiple surgeries.  Why my kids would limp back onto the soccer field, determined…

Confessions of a Cheater

I am a cheater.  I slow my speed when my coach’s back is turned, drop to my knees during pushups, and have been known to count my leg lifts by twos.  My last few sprawls of the evening are usually pretty pathetic, my mountain climbers fade into mountain crawlers, and by the third round of cardio my fists are rarely near my chin.

My analytical mind knows that cheating does me no good, hurting no one but myself.  I am keeping myself from reaching my goals, disappointing my…

Self Improvement Sucks

“CNY MMA teaches self improvement through Martial Arts training.”  Blah, blah, blah.  Ok, so I’ll lose a few pounds while learning some self-defense techniques.  Just another of those catchy slogans, thought up by some dude in a suit whose job it is to write this sort of thing.   Personally, I prefer their other slogan – “CNY MMA - Your goals are worth fighting for!”  That one is the cool kind of pun that says what it means and means what it says.  That one I can believe in,…

Mixed Emotions

As a mother I am proud that my son is training to be a fighter.  I am proud of his confidence, his courage, his talent, his natural ability.  I am proud to watch him as he explores this new realm of possibility, wavering between anxious child and self-assured athlete.  It is rewarding as a parent to hear praise for my child, especially knowing the obstacles that he has worked so hard to overcome.  It is humbling to partner my own son, to feel his strength and self-assurance, and to find that…

Paying it Forward

I love the idea of “Paying it Forward” - showing appreciation to one person by doing good for someone else.  For me, paying back never quite works.   There is always a sense of trying to get even.  If I do too much, you are now in my debt.  If I do too little, I am still in debt to you.  There is always a sort of power struggle, a sense of unease, tension, imbalance.  Whose turn is it?  Are we even yet?  Am I in control or are you?  By paying it forward, everyone wins.  Your good deed is…

Complete Freedom

Here it is almost 2 months that I have been a member, and I couldn't be happier. Having the opportunity to be a part of this organization has been a blessing. It has become a major part of my life. Most days it's the only thing that gets me by. I look forward to Tuesday's and Thursday's every week. It excites me because I know I can go in and accomplish my goals and think about myself for once instead of the normal chaos of making sure everyone else is taken care of, or has what they need.…

The View from Inside

Being inside the cage at CNY MMA is an incredible feeling.  From the outside you see an assorted and eclectic group of warriors, achieving impossible goals.  Men and women.  Old and young.  Thin and overweight.  Muscular and flabby.  Tattooed and beautiful.  Fighters and moms.  School kids, college kids and people you’d cross the street to avoid.  Once you step inside, all of that disappears.  All you see are your teammates. You see a beginner, hesitant and self-conscious, worried whether…

One Piece at a Time

Journal entry

November 16, 2011

You can do it.  One minute at a time.  Don’t try to do the whole class.  Just one round.  Not even the whole round.  Just one minute of that round.  Just one punch at a time.  One kick.  One crunch.  One throw.  One push up, or sit up or one more moment of wall sit.  Focus.  Determination.  Attitude.  You can do it, one piece at a time.  No one can do it all, but anyone can do one step.  So just do one step.  Then another.  Then one more. …

Partnering

Along with technique, discipline, strength and endurance we all need to learn the art of partnering.  There is more to partnering than simply standing beside another person, catching his punches and counting his reps.  Being a good partner means teaching and learning, motivating and encouraging, pushing and challenging.  It is a bonding experience, a letting go and letting in, a team-building intimacy.  For that one hour, nothing matters except your partnership.

Some nights,…

On Surviving Cardio

November 30, 2011

It’s supposed to take twenty-one times of doing something before it becomes a habit; with Cardio class, all it takes is once.  Intense, challenging, and unbelievably rewarding, this class is highly addictive.

Start with a stretch while you focus your mind and prepare yourself for what’s about to come.  Before you’re quite ready, it’s time. Jog, skip, lunge.  Butt kicks, high knees, shuffles.  Jumping jacks, seal claps, squats.  One minute to grab some…

A Letter to Santa

Dear Santa:

I hope everything is well with you and your extended family up at the north pole. I know it has been awhile since I've written you a letter I guess that's part of getting older. But this letter is special and different from all the others from my childhood  and I hope you enjoy it. This year I am not writing to ask for a new television, video game, or any other material gift. I am writing to give you a helping hand for once. I imagine sometimes you…

Why I train at CNY MMA...

I dont want to win anything because i train at cnymma and i have a thousand reasons to train. I came from a life that most would frown upon. Sure im 17 thats great your childhood was better and it really starts getting difficult when your in the real world. But those of you that think all this are very wrong. The childhood is what molds you. I came from a family where everything was okay until my dad became to lash out of anger of failure and my mother got sick mentally and physically. I…
