Kristin Yarnell The View from Inside

Being inside the cage at CNY MMA is an incredible feeling.  From the outside you see an assorted and eclectic group of warriors, achieving impossible goals.  Men and women.  Old and young.  Thin and overweight.  Muscular and flabby.  Tattooed and beautiful.  Fighters and moms.  School kids, college kids and people you’d cross the street to avoid.  Once you step inside, all of that disappears.  All you see are your teammates. You see a beginner, hesitant and self-conscious, worried whether…

Kristin Yarnell One Piece at a Time

Journal entry

November 16, 2011

You can do it.  One minute at a time.  Don’t try to do the whole class.  Just one round.  Not even the whole round.  Just one minute of that round.  Just one punch at a time.  One kick.  One crunch.  One throw.  One push up, or sit up or one more moment of wall sit.  Focus.  Determination.  Attitude.  You can do it, one piece at a time.  No one can do it all, but anyone can do one step.  So just do one step.  Then another.  Then one more. …

Kristin Yarnell Partnering

Along with technique, discipline, strength and endurance we all need to learn the art of partnering.  There is more to partnering than simply standing beside another person, catching his punches and counting his reps.  Being a good partner means teaching and learning, motivating and encouraging, pushing and challenging.  It is a bonding experience, a letting go and letting in, a team-building intimacy.  For that one hour, nothing matters except your partnership.

Some nights,…

Kristin Yarnell On Surviving Cardio

November 30, 2011

It’s supposed to take twenty-one times of doing something before it becomes a habit; with Cardio class, all it takes is once.  Intense, challenging, and unbelievably rewarding, this class is highly addictive.

Start with a stretch while you focus your mind and prepare yourself for what’s about to come.  Before you’re quite ready, it’s time. Jog, skip, lunge.  Butt kicks, high knees, shuffles.  Jumping jacks, seal claps, squats.  One minute to grab some…

Jermey "Murff" Murphy A Letter to Santa

Dear Santa:

I hope everything is well with you and your extended family up at the north pole. I know it has been awhile since I've written you a letter I guess that's part of getting older. But this letter is special and different from all the others from my childhood  and I hope you enjoy it. This year I am not writing to ask for a new television, video game, or any other material gift. I am writing to give you a helping hand for once. I imagine sometimes you…

Ric L. Stabler Why I train at CNY MMA...

I dont want to win anything because i train at cnymma and i have a thousand reasons to train. I came from a life that most would frown upon. Sure im 17 thats great your childhood was better and it really starts getting difficult when your in the real world. But those of you that think all this are very wrong. The childhood is what molds you. I came from a family where everything was okay until my dad became to lash out of anger of failure and my mother got sick mentally and physically. I…

Catherine Mars 18 months......100 pounds!

Today is my Year and a half anniversary of sobriety.  Some days it feels like I just started and others feel like they are never going to end, but all of them are freeing!  I am very happy, today, to know the people here.  I have accomplished more positive goals in this short time that I had in a lifetime.  18 months ago i remember trying to do a push up and being unable to push my 300 pound body off the mat without shaking.  I cried all the time!  I threw up during many classes.  I couldn't…

Catherine Mars Warrior Dash 2011

I ran (walked) my first Warrior Dash yesterday.  The fact that I call it my first guarantees that I will be doing this again!  About halfway up the mountain I began talking to Jesus!  And planning an escape route that I could take and no one would notice that I had given up!  I didn’t spend too much time entertaining these thoughts!  lol.....  When we got to the first obstacle I remembered feeling relief that I no longer had to hike up that ski slope.  The relief was short lived as I began…

Sifu Thai Fight: My student uses a Trick I taught him to put his opponent down in 7 sec. Check it out!

Here's a video of a recent fight my student Jamie Frier (Tai Kai) had in Watertown against Eric Gillette. Watch him use the elevator catch he learned training with me to drop his opponent in the first 7 secs of the fight. It ended with a 1st round KO! This is one of the Tricks I will be teaching Aug. 18 at the Thai Boxing Tricks Of The Trade Workshop at CNY MMA Cortland.

See you there!

Sifu Success is a direct result of your FOCUS!

The difficulty most people have with challenges is due to FOCUS!
When you focus on the PROBLEM your mind asks "Why can't I ?" A simple shift to focusing on the SOLUTION, and immediately your mind asks "How can I ?" Work to become Solution Oriented, rather than Problem Focused! Make the shift!

Jermey "Murff" Murphy If Today Was Your Last Day

Today I was awarded my assistant instructor level  (aka my green shirt). I have a ton of emotions running through me pride, humility, love,  and every other positive feeling I can think of. At a time like this I can’t help to think of where I came from, where I’ve been, and where I am going. Canadian hard rock Nickelback once wrote “If today was your last day and tomorrow was too late could you say goodbye to yesterday?” I came to CNY MMA almost four years ago closer to that last day then I…

Matt Derbyshire A Helping Hand

The other day a young teenage girl with her two younger siblings were stopped on their bikes near my house and appeared to be having trouble. I went to see if they needed help and saw that the oldest girl’s chain had come off. I put it back on for her and explained how as I went along in case it happened again, she thanked me and went on her way...no big deal.

The thing is, maybe it is a big deal. Not the act of putting a chain back on for someone, but helping someone who needed… Continue
